OnePlus One

Here's why OnePlus-One equals 4.5:

#OnePlus-One
OnePlus-One

Introduction:

Our OnePlus One has just received a software update which should address some of the issues experienced in this review. We're currently going through the new software and will update this review with our findings soon.

The Google Nexus 4, the Google Nexus 5, the Motorola Moto G, and now the OnePlus One; this 5.5-inch bolt from out of the blue (well, China) joins an exclusive list of smartphones that offer an awful lot of smartphone for not a lot of money.

But having used the OnePlus One as my primary phone for several days now, I'm wondering whether it needs to be placed in a category all of its own.

Here is a device that rivals the HTC One M8 and the Samsung Galaxy S5 for raw specs, but at a cost of just £229, $299. That's less than half the price of those aforementioned big hitters.

As such, much of my early time with the phone was spent warily turning it around in my hands, like some kind of mysterious artefact of unknown origin, not quite ready to believe what was being promised of it. There has to be some compromise here, right?

Well, yes there is. In fact, there are several. But it's staggering how small they seem when weighed against that double-take-inducing price tag.

However the OnePlus One is a pleasure to hold and to use. Okay, so it lacks the HTC One M8's gorgeous metallic sheen, and you won't turn any heads when you take it out of your pocket like you would with a golden iPhone 5S. But show me the phone that does.

OnePlus-One

The OnePlus One nevertheless feels great in the hand. It's primarily made up of a quality matte plastic shell that extends around the back and sides of the device. This isn't a unibody construction, and this rear panel can be removed for customisation purposes, but it's firmly fixed in place with minimal creaking or flexing.

There's a metal-effect plastic rim that separates this rear cover from the glass front, which cheapens the effect ever-so-slightly, but it's thin and unadorned. It does mean that the aforementioned glass frontage appears to stand out rather than melding into the body of the phone, but it's not an unpleasant effect.

Xiaomi's smartphones taps into the US market

Xiaomi Corp, the world's third-largest smartphone manufacturer, will launch its new smartphone in Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that falls in January 2015 in Las Vegas, the first-ever appearance of the fast-growing Chinese IT company in the US market.
According to the Economic Daily News in China, Xiaomi might launch its newest flagship smartphone Mi5 their newest flagship that has high-end specifications but with a low-end price, like most of the smartphones that have come out of China.
It was reported that the new smartphone will may pack a Quad 5.7-inch HD display, a powerful Qualcomm chipset as well as fingerprint scanning tech by default.
According to a report from International Data Corporation (IDC), Xiaomi's smartphone shipment in the third quarter 2014 ranked the third after Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co.
Lei Jun, Xiaomi's founder and CEO, dubbed as "China's Steve Jobs", said the company might become the world's largest smartphone maker in the next five to ten years during a forum of World Internet Conference held in November in China.
Xiaomi stepped into global market by entering 10 new markets India, Brazil and Russia this year. It also set a goal of increasing sales to 100 million phones in 2015, according to an April 23 report from Bloomberg News.
The company recently has been making a series of aggressive investments for entering the global and US market. Analysts point out that Lei has started to make Xiaomi's own ecosystem to challenge Apple.
On Dec 1, the company announced its participation in the $40 million fundraising for Misfit, a Silicon Valley-based start-up. It is the first time that Xiaomi has taken a stake in a US mobile-device maker.
Misfit, which claims to make the biggest-selling activity and sleep tracker in China, said on Tuesday it had raised new financing from Xiaomi, e-commerce company JD.com Inc., and venture-capital firms GGV Capital and Shunwei, a VC firm set up by Xiaomi.
Xiaomi Corp, and Kingsoft Corp., announced on Dec 4 that the two companies will invest $1 billion for cloud services in next three to five years.
Lei, co-founder of both companies, revealed details of the first-round $222 million investment in the NASDAQ-listed 21Vianet Group Inc., the largest carrier-neutral Internet data center service provider in China. Temasek Holdings of Singapore also agreed to inject $74 million into 21Vianet.
"Cloud service will become one of the prime costs of IT companies in the future," said Lei on Dec 3.
"For instance, at the current data upload speed, Xiaomi after next year will have to pay an annual $488 million fee for the data storage, most of which are the pictures and videos from users of Xiaomi's smartphones and other mobile technology products," said Lei.
"Sixty-eight million Xiaomi users are uploading 90 million pictures and 2 million videos every day," said Lei.
On Nov 19, Xiaomi also made a $294 million investment in online video provider iQiyi, a unit of search giant Baidu Inc.

Merry Christmas in India

Many Christians in India celebrate Jesus Christ's birth on on Christmas Day, which is annually held on December 25. The celebrations are most noticeable in states where there are many Christians. Christmas Day is a gazetted holiday in India.

merry christmas 2014

What do people do?

Many Christians mark Christmas Day by attending special church services, spending time with family members, wearing new clothes and eating a festive meal. Some families exchange gifts or give small presents or sweets to children. They may display small electric lamps or small clay oil-burning lamps and decorate their homes with banana or mango leaves. Some also put up a nativity scene with clay figures or a Christmas tree. Christmas trees in India are usually imitation pine trees or branches of native trees or bushes.

Some stores and malls may put up Christmas decorations and have actors playing Santa. Christmas celebrations in tourist areas and hotels may be created to emulate how Christmas Day is celebrated in the countries where tourists and travelers are from.

Public life

National, state and local government offices, post offices and banks are closed on Christmas Day. Christian stores, businesses and other organizations may be closed or have reduced opening hours. Those wishing to use public transport on the day may need to contact the local transport authorities to check on time-tables.

Background

Many Christians remember Jesus Christ's birth when they celebrate Christmas Day, which is on December 25 in the Gregorian calendar. His actual birthday remains unconfirmed. Scholars think that Saint Thomas the Apostle introduced Christianity to the area that is now India around 52 CE. There are now around 24 million Christians in India. The states with the largest percentages of Christians are:

Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland in north-west India.
Goa on the west coast.
Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the south.
Christmas Day is widely celebrated in these states, but may be barely marked in others.

Symbols

Symbols of Christmas in India include:

Small electric lights and oil burners.
Decorations made of banana or mango leaves.
Artificial pine trees or branches of native tree and bushes decorated with Christmas themed ornaments.
Nativity scenes with small clay figures.
Statues of or actors playing Santa Claus.
These are just some examples how Christmas is symbolized in India.

Gmail update brings Ms-Office document edit directly from your inbox

gmail download
G-mail

If you peek inside your Gmail inbox today, you might notice a feature that wasn’t previously available. Google has added an option to edit attachments containing Microsoft Office documents with one simple click, making it possible to start the editing process directly from your inbox.

Users that have already received the update will now notice an “Edit with Google Docs” option on the far right side of the attached document when hovering over it. Pressing it will convert it to the appropriate Google format, and redirects you to Google Docs where the file is automatically opened and ready for editing:

gmail inbox edit directly
For those that require the option of editing an Office file without changing the actual extension, Google recommends downloading the “Office editing for Docs, Sheets, and Slides” Chrome extension, which can be downloaded here. Keep in mind that all of the mentioned changes are relevant to the desktop version of Gmail, not for the mobile application.

The Google+ page from the Drive team also stated that 15 new Microsoft Office formats have been added to the list of supported file types that can be edited within Google Docs. You can find out more about editing options in Google Docs via Google’s support page here.

Not getting enough "likes" on your posts?... Try this....

The Plague: An app that spreds information like a virus on social networks.

A new social networking app called Plague gives you power to decide what posts should go viral in your circle and beyond.

We all know what the term ‘viral’ means in relation to the Internet, but what if a social network took that idea literally? No, I’m not talking about a social network that somehow infects your devices with viruses: rather, I’m talking about a new social network called Plague that literally tries to infect the world with your content.

Plague works like this: once you share a simple content (i.e. simple text, a link, photo, or a video), the content will find the first four mobile devices with the Plague app installed that are closest to you. Once found, your content will be delivered to the recipients, and if they like your content, they can choose to pass the content along to the next four recipients closest to them (that also have the Plague app installed) or ignoring the content (which will ultimately hurt the spread of the content).

This cycle continues until people stop spreading it. Each content displays its ‘patient zero’ – where the content originated from – and comments on the content as well. Other than that? There is no option for following a user or even sending a message to an individual user. There’s only one goal: to pass along interesting content to four people in your proximity or ignore content you don’t find interesting.

This is what is so great about Plague. There’s no emphasis on ‘Liking’ this or ‘Following’ this person: instead, the sole focus is on sharing awesome content. Every user on Plague is on equal footing, and each person has the opportunity to spread great content just like every other person.

Plague is a fantastic concept that tweaks the way we think about social networking, but it could also have dire consequences if Deep Sea isn’t careful.

Why Teens Prefer Tumblr and Ditching Facebook?

facebook-vs-tumbler
When Facebook was first developed in 2004, a lot of people (including myself) were skeptical. Many viewed the online platform as a way for teenage boys to keep tabs on their friends and potential girlfriends, send pictures of themselves posing in the latest fashion, and share an endless stream of useless information about their daily lives. Facebook was seen as a toy for the under 25s to develop their voyeuristic and narcissistic tendencies. However, if there is one thing capable of changing its stripes in record time, it's the internet. While in 2004 Facebook was primarily a tool for youth, it quickly transformed into a mutigenerational platform used for everything from keeping in touch with far-away relatives to career oriented self-promotion. It also revolutionized the way people communicate and made us excruciatingly aware of two very important phenomena: people love to observe other people, and they love to be observed.

The same phenomena that made Facebook so popular will also be its downfall. Just like with any addiction, one eventually needs more of the desired product in order to find satisfaction. In the case of the internet, people need better and updated versions of the same type of product. This is where Tumblr steps in.

Tumbler gives teenagers the ability to reach more people, share more pictures (and GIFs), and create their own online content. This means that they get a lot more visibility, and consequently, more dopamine. As one online blog so aptly pointed out, "Tumblr beats Facebook in everything. People spill their hearts out on Facebook and no one gives a s*it I spill my heart out on here and get props for it. You post something on Facebook, zero likes. Post it on Tumblr, 2,000 reblogs."

According to a recent survey by Posterous co-founder Garry Tan....

Tumblr was the favorite social network for the two age groups surveyed, ages 13-18 (teens) and 19-25 (young adults).

Teens-on-Social-Networks
Here’s the breakdown per platform:

  • Tumblr dominated, used regularly by 61% of teens and 57% of young adults surveyed.
  • Facebook drew in 55% of teens and 52% of young adults.
  • Twitter was used regularly by 22% of teens and 17% of young adults.
  • Instagram drew in 21% of teens and only 11% of young adults.
  • Snapchat (the newest of the platforms) earned 13% of teens and just 4% of young adults.

Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google+ grew faster than Facebook as well.

Getting in Trouble with WhatsApp Blue Ticks?

whatsapp blue ticks
Many WhatsApp users were surprised with the new read receipts feature of the messaging service that was quietly introduced into the app.

The read receipts feature allows users to see when a sent message has been received and read, not just when the message has been delivered.

Previously, WhatsApp showed one tick mark when a message has been sent, which would change to two grey tick marks when the massage has been successfully delivered.

With the update, the app now adds two blue tick marks to a message when it has been read by the recipient.

The app introduced this feature without any updates itself.

Only Android device owners can turn off the WhatsApp read notification for now, and will only work if the user manually updates that app through the website of WhatsApp. WhatsApp usually releases updates for its app through its website before rolling out the same update through the Google Play store of Android.

Firstly you have to obtain the latest APK for WhatsApp from the official website, which is version 2.11.444.

Once the latest version of WhatsApp has been downloaded, users should go to the Settings of their Android device, select Security, and then click on Unknown Sources to allow apps obtained from sources other than Google Play to be installed to the device. While the exact path to the option can vary between devices, the general idea is to allow the device to accept apps from outside sources.

The downloaded APK should then be accessed to install the latest WhatsApp version. After the installation has been finished, users should tap the icon with three dots in the app's top right corner. Users can then click on Settings, then on Account, then on Privacy.

From there, the read receipts feature can be disabled.

Text Messaging Android App WhatsApp starts End-to-End Encryption

whats app an android app
WhatsApp, the most widely used messaging app, that Facebook acquired for $19 billion earlier in the year, has teamed up with Open Whisper Systems to offer end-to-end encryption on messages sent through the app.

With the encryption, messages exchanged between users will be encrypted by default with a password so that only the senders and the receivers will be able to read them.

The company said that it has been working with WhatsApp for the previous half year to incorporate the TextSecure protocol into the app.

The TextSecure protocol is a strong, open source encryption protocol that the company has been developing for the past three years. It works by scrambling the messages using a cryptographic key that only the user is able to access. Since the key permanently stays within the user's device, the encrypted messages are practically uncrackable externally.

The protocol also uses a feature called "forward secrecy," which creates new encryption keys for every message sent. This means that even if a hacker would be able to access a user's encryption key, only the message that used that key will be compromised. All the other messages are still safe.

Open Whisper Systems, which developed the encryption software, announced that messages of users of Android devices with the latest version of WhatsApp are already being encrypted and that the process will gradually be applied to other platforms.

Only user-to-user messages for the Android version are encrypted for now, with support for group chats and media messages containing pictures and videos to be rolled out soon.

End-to-end encryption will deliver complete privacy to WhatsApp users, as the system will mean that WhatsApp will not be able to hand over information contained within WhatsApp messages even if law enforcers request for it.

Symbian operating system future

symbian operating system
Mobile users especially Nokia mobile users are familiar with word Symbian. When Symbian phones were introduced they were have great demand. It has made a great  impact in the market. But recently its demand has been affected. Nokia has officially announced the stop the production of mobile with Symbian Operating system.

This downfall of Symbian has to be blamed on Google’s Android. Android is given more publicity than anything else. Whatever be the fact, Android is setting its stage. Symbian is made the Operating system for Nokia only. But all the other leading mobile phone are now providing phone with Android operating system in them.

Apart from developers android is getting support from mobile handset manufacturers. It’s like they are waiting for the successor in the industry to take on. Also Google is providing secure and user’s friendly brand to its customers. Here is where Symbian fails.

Symbian and android has not given developers any open community or open code. So the main difference comes in the brand. Even though Symbian has been in the market for decades and it is sad to say it hasn’t got enough market value like android.

Symbian has weak user interface. When developing a software product source code, market value all should be foreseen .This is where android has made its foundation. It is a counter blast for Nokia that it could not keep its name in market like android now. It is trying its best compete with brands like iPhone and Blackberry .So there should be a good effort from company side to keep its market value up. Nokia N8 is such a model that can compete with others.

But it took a long time for Nokia N8 to be released  in the market after its announcement. It was the first phone to have latest Symbian 3 Operating system. Even then its demand has decreased with the delay in release. The world then started to think about new feature other than this. Review about Nokia N8 says that it has got good hardware but bad software. Good camera, aesthetics and durability are shown as the exceptional features of the phone. This new Symbian OS has overcome it errors than the previous version. But if it needs to be competent with the iPhone they have to develop products than of now.

Because of these problems the Nokia’s new CEO Stephen Elope has said they will switch to Windows Phone 7 operating system. So Symbian will only be a history then.
When talking about Symbian the users think about its difficulty in implementation. The hang applications, rebooting at uneven times, pop up message shown when opening message box are only a few problem out of a large set.

But only when smart phone were introduced we came about these problems. Symbian was not introduced for these phones. We much think about what Symbian has given us. Without giving much amount Symbian gave the latest and advanced feel in technology to common people through low end phones. There are a number of people who cannot afford the high end ones. Only Symbian was there for their need.

So we can call Symbian as a real phone operating system. Nokia has said to cooperate with Microsoft recently. So Windows Phone 7 will be the future operating system in Nokia phones .This will take at least two years to completely change to its new one. Also last year’s market review show that the demand for Symbian phones has not been affected so much.
In between the switching to its new operating system Nokia said, it will try to support Symbian market. But such  a move is said to affect the company’s  growth.

Smartphone Future

Symbian Anna operating system is the latest Symbian version from Nokia. Modified user interface, fast browser, search through Ovi map are said to be its main features. This shows that even though switching to Windows Phone 7 operating system, Nokia is concerned with Symbian. In the next five years drastic changes are said to takes place in smart phone market. We can see this by looking at history of last five years. Google has not only introduced a new operating system, Android, but its changed the concept of using phone. Accelerometer, touch screen, GPS based location tracking etc has come to phones. All these happened within just two to three years.

Wireless HDMI, built-in projector, figure print scanner,3D etc are expected to be in smart phone in future. Also phones are said replace computer in future. In Japan Docomo has already started such a move by giving Toshiba T-01A to its customers. Nokia itself has released a device calling N900.

Fully connected location sensitive devices are next. It is the successor of Bluetooth connectivity in Business phones. Sending application through Wi-Fi to another smart phone is the concept here. Gaming is the next development area.Alive-4 in iPhone has already given hints that games become more graphical in future. Smart phones will revolutionize area of socialnetworking also.

By 2015 we may not use Facebook because connection will be automatically set up on having information about a person. So by 2015 Personal Computer will only be secondary. Smart phone will become a one stop connection and a close friend of any one.

Clean Up Your Gmail Inbox

Most people have a Gmail account these days, and at least some of you might have realised - with an unpleasant shock - that the space in your inbox is getting filled up. Gmail has a pretty huge 15GB limit, but over the years, mail tends to build up, and many of us are probably reaching those limits now.

Luckily cleaning up your Gmail inbox isn't a challenge, thanks to some Gmail's own tools and some third party apps as well. We've found a few reliable ways to quickly clean your Gmail inbox. Start now and we promise it won't take more than half an hour.

Gmail search filters
Gmail doesn't have the option to sort files - you can't get the inbox to display mails alphabetically, or according to the date received, or size. This might sound like a problem, but as is to be expected from a Google company, Gmail has a superb search function, which can be used to solve the problem easily. Follow these steps to clear up the emails you don't need:

1. Sign in to Gmail > go to the big search bar at the top.

2. First, let's clear out the emails taking up the most space. Type Larger:10M in the search bar > hit enter or click the magnifying glass icon.

3. This will find emails taking up more than 10MB. Now select the mails you don't want > delete (trash can icon).

4. You can experiment with different file sizes, depending on how much you need to delete.

5. The obvious next step is to clear out emails from the long ago. You can use Before:YYYY/MM/DD to specify a cutoff date, or older_than:years if you want to search for mails that are one, two or more years old. For example, if you want mails that are older than one year, you can type older_than:1y > press enter to see the list, and then select mails > delete to make space.

6. You can use combinations of commands, so if, for example, you want to delete old mails with attachments that are more than 1MB in size, then type the following into search: has:attachment larger:1M older_than:1y > press enter, then see the list, and select items > delete mails.

7. In case you're starting to worry about remembering all these operators, then you will be happy to know that Google has you covered. Click on the downward pointing arrow at the right corner of the search bar, and you will see the advanced search, which lets you apply all these filters in a simple menu.
Find Big Mail
Find Big Mail was the only way to - well - find big emails in Gmail, until Gmail added the filters we mentioned already. The app is still pretty useful because it automates the process of finding mails that should be deleted and also creates labels so you can find them again later without any difficulty.

Follow these steps to clean up that messy inbox:

1. Head to the Find Big Mail website > enter your Gmail address in the big form > click Find Big Mail.

2. Now Google will ask you to authorise this service. Enter your password (if you haven't logged in already) > click Allow access.

3. The service will now begin scanning your inbox. It claims that it only sees the size of your emails and not the content. Once scanning is complete, you will get an email alert. Ignore the email.

4. On the left side, under the links for inbox, sent mail, etc., you will see new labels. If you don't see this, expand the labels menu. You will see four labels: FindBigMail - Top, FindBigMail > 1MB, FindBigMail > 5MB, FindBigMail > 10MB. Click any of these > select the emails you don't need > delete.

5. The advantage of this method is that you don't need to repeat the search later to find the worst offenders, if you're running out of space again.
Mailstrom
If you're willing to use a paid service, then we really liked Mailstrom. The app works great and you can delete up to 660 emails for free, to get an idea of how it works. Unfortunately, using it beyond this limit involves a payment of around Rs. 300 per month.

With that said, Mailstrom's feature set is fairly advanced. It sorts emails by sender, let's you unsubscribe from newsletters quickly and bundles related emails so that you can delete several at once. Follow these steps:

1. Open the Mailstrom website > enter your Gmail address in the form > click Start Free Trial > click Authorize With Google > enter email and password > Sign in.

2. Now you will see your inbox through Mailstrom. It will take some time to sort all your emails. Once done, you will see all emails grouped by sender. We found surprisingly large numbers of emails from people we hadn't spoken to in years. We started by deleting these.

3. You can quickly clear emails using the left sidebar, which lets you view emails by size, time, emails from social networks and has a handy Unsubscribe link to help clear the clutter.

We recommend Mailstrom for those who are facing a serious email overload and have abandoned all hope of ever cleaning up their inboxes. We managed to clear over 200 emails within a minute using Mailstrom. For the average user though, the free methods we already described are probably the better choice.

These are our favourite methods for cleaning the Gmail inbox. What are yours?

Facebook buys cybersecurity startup PrivateCore

Facebook announced today it was buying California-based cybersecurity startup PrivateCore, in a move to boost defences of its vast server network.

"I believe that PrivateCore's technology and expertise will help support Facebook's mission to help make the world more open and connected, in a secure and trusted way," Facebook's Joe Sullivan said.

"Over time, we plan to deploy PrivateCore's technology directly into the Facebook server stack."
PrivateCore was launched in 2012 in Palo Alto and specializes in protecting servers against malware and other kinds of intrusions.

Private Core's Oded Horovitz said in a blog post that the two firms "have an aligned mission."

"Since the beginning, we have worked tirelessly on our technology to protect servers from malware threats, unauthorized physical access, and malicious hardware devices," he said.

"Working together with Facebook, there is a huge opportunity to pursue our joint vision at scale with incredible impact."

Terms of the deal were not announced.

Would you pay for an Ad-Free Premium Facebook Service?

Twitter Co-founder Biz Stone started using Facebook as he mentions on a Medium post, and after having used Facebook for a while he had a thought…

“They could offer Facebook Premium. For $10 a month, people who really love Facebook (and can afford it), could see no ads. Maybe some other special features too. If 10% percent of Facebook signed up, that’s $1B a month in revenue. Not too shabby”

Facebook recorded $7.87bn in revenue for 2013 (not a bad money maker), however this would be a far cry from the possible $12 billion they could make a year due to Stone’s subscriptions plan, which is similar to that of Spotify and Pandora who remove ads as a premium service. This would then be on top of what they would make from the ads running as per normal.

What is also interesting to note, does Stone think Twitter should have a premium ad free system to remove the promoted trends and tweets?

Should users have to pay for an ad free social media experience? After all Facebook is the one who filled our screen with the ads in the first place.

So the question is would you ever pay to have an ad free Facebook experience?

China's Alibaba Complains of Blackmail by Media Organisation

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, which is preparing for its US initial public offering (IPO), on Friday claimed it was being blackmailed by a media organisation which runs a business magazine.

The company said it has approached police after the media outlet, which remains unnamed, asked the e-commerce giant to pay $300,000 for a research report against it to be dropped.

The research is allegedly based on negative reports from a domestic weekly and comments by individuals online, Alibaba said in a statement.

Police in Hangzhou city, where the company is based, registered a case on Monday, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The company is currently in the quiet period before its much-anticipated IPO and go public on the New York Stock Exchange. The IPO has been postponed until September, according to the latest reports.

Alibaba welcomes supervision from the mass media, but it will not tolerate acts that go beyond the legal boundaries, said Jack Ma, founder and chairman of the company.

The statement did not disclose the media institution's name, but insiders speculated it referred to a Huangzhou-based business magazine.

Facebook to challenge Amazon soon?

Houston: After making billions connect socially on its network, Facebook is testing a new feature designed to let users buy products directly from ads and posts on its news feed.

"With this feature, people on desktop or mobile can click the 'Buy' call-to-action button on ads and Page posts to purchase a product directly from a business, without leaving Facebook," the post reads.

In an image of what this feature looks like, a 'Buy' button sits in the bottom right corner of the ads that users normally see as they scroll through their Facebook news feeds.

This feature is currently in its test phase, so it is being used only for a few small and mid-size businesses in the US.

The "Buy" option will be available for specific products on Facebook's site and mobile app starting Thursday.

The announcement came Thursday on the company's 'Facebook for Business' blog, a resource for businesses that use Facebook to market their products.

Facebook has previously tried to enable purchasing on its site, but with little success, reports say.
'Facebook Credits', for example, was a virtual currency that allowed users to make purchases within games, one US dollar was equal to 10 Facebook Credits.

While this feature was disbanded in 2012, it has since been replaced by Facebook Game Cards that let users "buy items" in their "favorite games and apps."

Facebook had said earlier this year that it would avoid a direct purchasing feature on its news feed.
But Facebook is now feeling the pressure to compete with sites like Twitter, which recently released a 'buy now' button that lets users buy items directly from paid-for tweets and the online mega-giant Amazon, which packs its devices with features that take the users directly into the Amazon Store, compelling them to make purchases in the moment.

However, the nature of purchasing something with a simple tap on a screen, has recently come under scrutiny.

A federal lawsuit filed against Amazon last week alleges that the online retailer took in millions of dollars through in-app payments by unsuspecting children.

In the case, the Federal Trade Commission is contending that parents were unknowingly billed for charges made by their children while playing games that required actual currency which appeared to be part of the game and seemed no different than the games' play currency.

To assuage the concerns of privacy by its more than 1.2 billion users, Facebook says no credit or debit card information users share will be given to advertisers.

"We have built this feature with privacy in mind, and have taken steps to help make the payment experience safe and secure," the post reads.

'Game of War' Mobile Game Maker Looking at $3 Billion Valuation

Machine Zone Inc, the developer of popular mobile game "Game of War: Fire Age," is in talks with JPMorgan Chase & Co to raise funding that could value the company at more than $3 billion, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

The expected valuation would make the Palo Alto, California-based company one of the biggest startups in the world in terms of market cap, the report said.

Machine Zone is expected to raise about $250 million in a private placement, Bloomberg News reported, citing a person with knowledge of the company.

The company, launched in 2008 as a dating app developer, renamed itself as Machine Zone in 2012 and shifted its strategy to focus on mobile games, according to the Journal.

"Game of War" is known for its built-in translator that helps multiple players across the world interact online without language barriers.

Machine Zone is trying to raise private funding months after a weak market debut by mobile game developer King Digital Entertainment Plc, dashing hopes that its coming-out party could revive investor interest in the mobile gaming industry.

King's IPO price of $22.50 valued the company at about $6 billion.

Social Technology – The Connected Workspace

Social technology is dominating the world, everybody knows what Facebook and Twitter are, and most people have an account there. Now-a-days even most businesses have some sort of social technology involved in their business. Research from McKinsey Global Institute from late 2012 put the figure at 72% – 72% of business report using social technology within their business, that’s a huge percentage of companies. But, McKinsey also found out how much potential we have failed to unlock with social technologies, and the numbers are very surprising.

With so much potential still to unlock, the great success and results that businesses are already seeing from social technologies are just the start, and there is a lot more we could do to utilize these new technologies to their full potential.

Current State of Social Tech in the Workplace:

  •  72% of businesses report using social technology within their company
  • But, only 3% of those 72% are seeing substantial benefits from their efforts
  • Productivity could be improved by up to 25% in some workers through the use of social technology
  • Collaboration is improved by up to 66% in businesses who have implemented social technology
  • Using social technologies to replace conventional methods of business could save thousands of dollars and hours of time, for example by using free phone conferencing services instead of conventional meetings, or messaging services for marketing instead of manual one-by-one marketing which is very time-consuming

How U.S. College Students Use their Technology [Infographic]

Sometimes it helps to see the numbers behinds the trends to confirm popular assumptions. In this case, Onlinecolleges.net assembled an infographic to help digest technology usage— all from student perspectives.

Most of the numbers are obvious— 87 percent say their laptop is the most important piece of tech and 78 percent say wi-fi is crucial to academic success.

But wait, it gets more interesting in items five [Most important sites] and six [Social Networking in Academic success]. Google beats Wikipedia, and Facebook beats academic-focused social networks. The crucial question is, “Why?” Could it be that Facebook was already built for college students by college students? If you have thoughts, drop us a comment or email. But for now, on to the pretty picture:

Google | Orkut departure adds another project to Google’s kitty of exits

Orkut departure adds another project to Google’s kitty of exits

Within a month of people bidding goodbye to the iconic Ambassador car, the time has come for good old Orkut to depart forever. The original social networking site that once had a huge collection of scraps and photographs is being phased out by Google due to lack of takers.

Orkut was launched early in 2004, the same year that Facebook, now the world’s No 1 social network with 1.28 billion users, was founded.

Google has announced that it will shut down Orkut, which is widely used in Brazil and India but hasn’t caughton more broadly across the rest of the world, on September 30 to focus on its other social networking initiatives.

Orkut may have lost its popularity battle against Facebook, but Google’s original social network was bigger than Facebook in emerging markets such as Brazil and India just a couple of years ago. According to comSCORE, until December 2011 Orkut was the most popular social network in Brazil.

Less than two years later, Facebook’s lead was so far ahead that it had a 74% market share compared with Orkut’s 0.97%, states a report by eMarketer.

Orkut’s growth and popularity did not last long, as Facebook emerged as a powerful social networking tool for millions. Facebook was created by a college student — the famous Mark Zuckerberg — for other college students, which emerged as a site that not only connects teenagers to friends, but other students, their families and even their favorite TV shows, movies, and stores.

Facebook also launched separate profile pages for businesses, allowing them to create events and fan pages for their current and potential consumers. Facebook transformed as a platform where programmers can create applications and games on it, that allow users to spend most of their time in the same platform without shifting to other websites.

While some may mourn over Orkut’s silent departure, Google dropping its services is not a huge surprise. Over the years the search giant has axed many of its services to create room for expanding newer projects.

In 2013-2014, Google discontinued Google Schemer (2011-2014), Google Reader (2004-2013), IGoogle (2005-2013) and Google Postini Services (2007-2013).

Last year, on July 1, many users were left unhappy and clueless when Google deactivated its Reader services. Google Reader was an RSS/Atom feed aggregator operated by Google. It was created in early 2005 by Google engineer Chris Wetherell and launched on October 7, 2005, through Google Labs. Google Reader grew in popularity to support a number of apps which used it as a platform for serving news and information to people.

Prior to this Google has also dropped Google Health (2008-2012), Google News Badges (2011-2012), Google Buzz (2010-2011) etc.

    Thanks.

Freedom Wars: New Details on Play Station(PS) Vita’s Upcoming Action RPG

Freedom Wars: New Details on PS Vita’s Upcoming Action RPG

It’s my distinct honor to bring you more information regarding one of the biggest PS Vita titles you’ll see this year – Freedom Wars! The futuristic action game launched last week in Japan, so we wanted to bring a few more details to our North American “Prisoners.”

Those who were able to visit the PlayStation booth at E3 might have had a chance to play our multiplayer co-operative demo – thanks to all who stopped by! I saw a lot of expert thorn-wielders soaring across the skies of the Panopticon, sawing Abductors apart and saving civilians to decrease their 1 million year sentence of penal servitude, and I must say, I was very impressed. However, the one recurring question I continue to hear from the community is – “How’s the story?” Well, let’s take a peek:

Freedom Wars promises intense co-op action with a captivating storyline. I’d like to leave you today with a message from our Japan Studio Producer, Junichi Yoshizawa. Yoshizawa-san has been tirelessly promoting Freedom Wars throughout Japan across the past few months, so I asked him to share a few words with the community:

Last week, we were finally able to release Freedom Wars in Japan. To celebrate the successful launch, I wanted to take a moment to write a message to our eager fans in North America.
Freedom Wars is a title I created to realize a dream of mine. My vision was to develop a PS Vita game that took advantage of the handheld system’s unique features, enabling gamers to come together via ad-hoc and Wi-Fi to overcome terrifying enemies. PlayStation has a storied legacy of creating innovative experiences and our collective goal was to create a Vita game that brought gamers together in a socially connected, location-based, co-op experience.

In order to do that, I gathered a number of well-known developers with an impressive pedigree for creating some of Japan’s most beloved titles – developers Shift and Dimps. These two developers both produce high-quality, interesting titles, but in this case I wanted to utilize both of their strengths, so I asked Shift to be in charge of game design, character design and story, while Dimps handled programming, graphics and direction.
Click here to see the full gallery
The collaboration between these two developers has been wonderful and the “Freedom Wars” that they have helped create has three distinct strengths:

The first is the outrageous world and story, where prisoners are bound by 1 million years of penal servitude for the sin of “living” and need to fight for their freedom.

The second is a new game where the goal isn’t to just defeat your enemy, but to save people from your defeated enemies and create a multiplayer experience where you can clearly divide up responsibilities among your teammates.
The third is a ranked competition where players can contribute to the areas they actually live in and battle on behalf of their own “city state.”

With the coordination of each of these pillars, we created Freedom Wars – a testament to our collective vision of delivering a frenetic, co-op action game that we believe will please the Western community when it launches later this year.

    Take care!

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Game

2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Review: A Fresh Coat of Paint

The Fifa games have always been popular in India, but over the years, the series has gone through some ups and downs. The previous game, FIFA 14, actually released in 2013, and was relatively successful. New features like precision movement and improved physics and ball handling kept fans involved, while the game remained fun and easy to get into. Six months down the line, not too much has changed, and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil seems more like a formality.

That's a fact that's echoed by releasing the game only on the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360. Both systems are still pretty impressive, but today, most high profile games are being released with the new generation of consoles in mind. We played the game on an Xbox 360, and while the game is enjoyable on its own terms, there's not much to separate it from the last entry in the series.
Some common complaints, which were there in FIFA 14, remain - in making the game more realistic, it's also become slower moving and your controls don't give your players arcade-like magical turning abilities anymore. Instead, the game is now more calculated, which is going to appeal to some and put off others. If you're not fanatical about football, you might fall into the latter category.

    The endless treadmill
Most gamers are familiar with the annual refresh, where you get essentially the same game, but repackaged with slightly better visuals, slightly different tools, released year after year to a devoted fan following. This problem is even more apparent when you look at sports games - for obvious reasons, the rules can't be changed, physics has to be realistic so you can't make things bigger and better by adding vehicles or a level on a moon base. With these constraints in mind, sports games are often an endless treadmill where each version is only fractionally different from the one that preceded it.

That has never been more apparent than with 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil (we will henceforth be referring to the game as FIFA Brazil), which follows so closely on the heels of FIFA 14. That's not to say that FIFA Brazil is a bad game - far from it. But while each successive Call of Duty gets an exciting new backdrop and weapons, FIFA Brazil has to content itself with the pageantry of the World Cup.
In all fairness, FIFA Brazil does this well. Crowd reactions are great, and the stadiums and camera tricks that pepper the delivery really do make it feel like you're watching a real broadcast of a football match. And of course, the game does its best to shower you with authentic details, such as 20 new stadiums, 203 teams, with anthems and home country cheering going crazy.

    Strong fundamentals
In FIFA 14, there are all the modes you've come to expect, such as captain your country on road to the world cup, which lets you play the lead up to the actual World Cup, and you'll be able to replay actual matches, to rewrite history on your console at least.

But how does the game play? As we said, FIFA Brazil itself handles pretty much like its predecessor. The running and dribbling can feel a little slower than older versions of the game, and you're encouraged to play more tactically.

You have more control over the ball, and more freedom to dribble, while the new shoot controls can - with some practice - give you a lot more accuracy. What this means is that you can play FIFA Brazil a little more aggressively, and passes are wonderfully precise, which means that the games have plenty of action.

    Verdict
If you're a complete football addict, who bought the game last year and is thinking about buying it again, then you're probably going to buy it despite the fact that the game hasn't really changed, beyond surface trappings. Otherwise, if you bought FIFA 14 already, and are on the fence about this game, skip it.

If you've last played Fifa a couple of years ago, and enjoy the genre though, then FIFA 2014 World Cup Brazil is a pretty good game, with excellent presentation and enjoyable gameplay.

Pinterest review: Cleaner, easier to manage

Pinterest review: Cleaner, easier to manage

Don't worry, Pinterest fans: Your sprawling virtual pegboards of wedding dresses, handmade jewelry, craft projects and food porn haven't changed dramatically. They're just easier to manage.
The popular link- and photo-sharing website has rolled out an update, one offering people simpler navigation and new ways to arrange their boards to fit their needs. Although the haphazard spirit of Pinterest remains, the site is much less overwhelming.

I wasn't a Pinterest user before, so the redesign gave me a chance to take a good look at the site for the first time. Before that, I had refused to be sucked into yet another form of social media. I figured I didn't have much use for it.

In the months since I started testing out Pinterest's new look, though, I've found the service helpful in organizing and sharing my continually expanding recipe collection. And it's fun to check what other people around the world are looking at and to see which strangers choose to follow me or respond to what I'm sharing.

Although it is not a replacement for Facebook or Twitter, and doesn't pretend to be, it is a beautiful and vast world with more than 25 million users around the world.

For those who have never used Pinterest, the free site lets people "pin" pictures from websites they want to share on online peg boards. You can choose to share the boards with just a few close friends or the entire Pinterest world. Others can comment on the boards and pins, "like" them or repin items on their own boards.

The result is an eclectic mix of millions of boards spanning just about as many topics. Although it doesn't offer as much of a chance to communicate and debate the way Facebook and Twitter do, Pinterest is an interesting and often beautiful supplement to those social media networks.

Pinterest's recent redesign is intended to cut down on clutter and make the site easier to manage, without drastically changing its look. The new look continues to evolve. Most of the changes are very subtle, and some have been tweaked or reversed already, helping Pinterest avoid the kind of backlash that Facebook has weathered in the past. Pinterest promises even more updates in the weeks and months ahead.

One of the most noticeable changes so far is Pinterest's move to larger pins, so you get four rather than five items per row. The site looks cleaner and less overwhelming because you don't see as many items on the screen at once. Much of the text previously found on Pinterest boards is smaller or gone. Menus have been streamlined.

What impresses me most about Pinterest - and also what drove me crazy - is its vast variety. Although there's no shortage of boards devoted to food, clothing, gadgets and home decor, there are also ones devoted to obscure topics such as doors, hockey goalies and the character Daryl from the TV show "The Walking Dead."

Some boards are very artistic and personal, while others, like mine, are more practical than pretty. The possibilities are endless, and so is the potential for wasting time - another reason I held off on joining for so long. Basically, whatever you're obsessed with, there's something on Pinterest for you.

    For me, that's food.

I have hundreds of food-related sites bookmarked on my work and home computers, plus my iPhone and my iPad. They cover healthy recipes geared toward using up ingredients from my weekly farm share, tips for cooking a filet mignon and lists of New York restaurants with the best ramen and pizza. Other people have shared everything from the most ornate wedding cakes to those old-fashioned casseroles held together with canned soup.

Pinterest became a handy way to organize all that. First, I set up a Pinterest board simply titled "Recipes." That quickly spawned separate boards for easy meals, desserts and New York City restaurants. Although they pale in size so far to many of the countless other recipe boards out there, I find myself adding a couple things every day as I browse Twitter, Facebook and, of course, other Pinterest boards.

The boards also serve as a handy way for me to share recipes. Want my go-to red velvet cake, mac and cheese and turkey chili recipes? They're all on my Pinterest page. It also gives me easy access to my recipes when I need them. Rather than emailing myself links to recipes that I've bookmarked on my office computer, I can just pin them to my board and open up it later on my iPhone as I walk through the grocery store or on my iPad as I stir something on the stove.

After just a few months, some of my boards have grown pretty large. The new, less cluttered version of Pinterest helps me find what a need a little faster.

The activity feed, which details who likes and repins your pins along with other information, is in the process of moving to a drop-down menu on the right-hand side, clearing more space for the pins and their often beautiful photos. Its content is expanding as well. Notifications go back further in time than what users previously saw.

Filtering boards and pins by topic, such as "Art," "Food & Drink" and "Geek," is now easier, too. Instead of one long list dropping down from the middle of your page, the categories fall from the upper left in three shorter columns. It's a simple change that makes the list less daunting to read through. Meanwhile, all of the profile and account settings have been consolidated in a dropdown menu on the right.

A plethora of new information also pops up now when you take a close-up look at a pin. To the right of the pin is a mini version of the board it came from, which you can scroll through. There is a mini board showing other pins from the same website, so you can discover related recipes, for instance. Below all of that is a collection of pins from people who pinned the pin you're looking at. It's a way to discover material from like-minded people. It's a lot of content on one page, but surprisingly manageable.

Pinterest has also boosted its search capabilities, so that when you start typing something in the search box located in the upper-left corner of the page, a list of suggested words appears below it. That's helpful if you don't know exactly how to spell something.

But some popular features have also been eliminated. Gone is the site's "originally pinned by" feature, which showed which user was the first to pin a certain item. But Pinterest notes that many users have requested its return. I wouldn't be surprised if it did. Based on user feedback, Pinterest has already brought back other features, including one that allows users who have just pinned something to look at related pins or go straight to their pin by clicking on its "see it now" button.

What makes Pinterest different from other social media services is that it's not so much about posting your opinions or even letting your friends know about what's going on in your life. Instead of creating new content, it's about sharing and organizing what's already out there, preferably content that's attached to cool photos.

You get a beautiful visual experience and links to just about everything online right now.

iPhone 6 5.5-Inch Model to Feature 128GB Variant and OIS Camera

iPhone 6 5.5-Inch Model to Feature 128GB Variant and OIS Camera

We might see the next iPhone models - Apple has for a while been rumoured to be making 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch variants of the iPhone - being offered in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB storage variants, hinting a new report from China. In the meanwhile, a set of alleged iPhone 6 dummy model videos has made their way to the Web
Feng, a Chinese blog, cites sources familiar with Apple's supply chain and claims that the company's alleged 5.5-inch iPhone 6 variant will feature a 128GB storage variant. The report further claims that the 128GB storage variant will be limited to the bigger variant of the rumoured iPhone 6, and the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will offer the conventional 64GB as its maximum storage variant.

The move is said to be an attempt of Apple to differentiate the anticipated 5.5-inch iPhone 6 model (phablet) from other phones in the company's line-up. However, there is still no word on whether the smaller 4.7-inch iPhone will offer the minimum 16GB storage. If the 16GB variant is dumped by Apple, then the unannounced 4.7-inch iPhone 6 might be unveiled with just two storage variants - 32GB and 64GB.

On Wednesday, in-line with the current claims, a report indicated that Apple might dump the 16GB storage version for its next generation.

An earlier report citing a research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also suggested that the alleged 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would sport OIS (optical image stabilisation) for the rear camera. The report further claimed that the alleged 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will not come with OIS.

In addition, two new YouTube videos have surfaced on the Internet showing the dummy iPhone 6 - 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models in full glory. One of the videos purportedly shows the rear panel of both the rumoured iPhone 6 models featuring the Apple logo.

Meanwhile, the other alleged iPhone 6 video shows both the models sporting slim bezels and the home button placed below the display. The smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model appears to include a gold-coloured rim around the home button, similar to the one found on the iPhone 5s. The video also compares the bigger alleged iPhone 6 with 5.5-inch display with the LG G3 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

A recent report claimed that Apple's next iPhone would hit shelves on September 19. The Cupertino-based company has been rumoured to be testing a higher screen resolution of 960x1704 pixels on at least one of the two iPhone models likely to debut this year.

We remind readers however, that nothing is official yet, and that all such leaks must be taken with a pinch of salt.

HTC Confirms Android L Update for One and One (M8) Smartphones

HTC has announced that it will be rolling out the Android L update to its 2013 flagship, HTC One, also referred to as the One (M7), and its new flagship, the HTC One (M8).

The Taiwanese handset maker announced the news via its official blog post, and said, "Our approach will be the same with the Android L release from Google. This release promises to bring new features and tools to Android and we are excited to bring it to you and your HTC. As part of our HTC Advantage commitment globally, we pledge to update all of our HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) smartphones within 90 days of receiving final software from Google."

The software update timeline will begin once we receive the final software from Google and device updates will vary based on device, region, and carrier."

We can expect more handset makers to announce the Android L update for smartphones.

The Google I/O 2014 keynote address saw some major announcements from the company that included Android Wear, with more details revealed about the version of the operating system customised for wearable gadgets such as smartwatches; Android Auto, which has been tailored to work with cars; Android TV, majorly optimized for TV-watching, and the next version of Android, which goes by the temporary code name "Android L."

Further, to reach more people, Google unveiled an initiative called Android One, designed to help manufacturers build low-cost smartphones for emerging markets such as India.

    NaMo Antivirus Suite

Indian Firm Releases Free NaMo Antivirus Suite

Domestic IT firm Innovazion has named its new antivirus software 'NaMo', the popular short name of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.
The software will provide free protection to PC users against malware and virus attacks. While the current version offers basic protection, the company plans to launch advanced versions of the software as well as those for Apple's Mac PCs. The current software will also get regular updates.

"India is the third largest country globally in terms of Internet users. However, statistics show that only 13 percent are using valid license of antivirus software and 30 percent tend to re-install trial versions of same or other antivirus software," Innovazion CEO Abhishek Gagneja told PTI.

However, the remaining 57 percent systems either have no protection or are using unknown applications for protection of their devices and this is the segment that NaMo AV is targeting, he added.

Gagneja, however, clarified that the company has no association with any political party or its leaders.

"By building this software, we wanted to ... congratulate the current government. We also want to pass a message to the government that the nation has high expectations from them," he said.

The antivirus has features like real-time detection of infections, intelligent scanning, custom detection and is light on hard drive.

Started in 2007, Innovazion has a presence in seven countries including India, the US, the UK, Germany, Canada, Romania, China and Singapore with over 500 employees.

Its primary services are application development, business consulting, IT infrastructure management and marketing research.

Asked about the revenue model, Gagneja said the company would continue to offer the security software for free.

"We have other businesses that are doing well. Last year, the group's revenue was $16 million, which we expect will grow 100 percent this year. NaMo AV will continue to be a free product," he said.
